Holy Beano, kids, raw foods are making a revival.

A few of us may remember our parents' early 70's experiments with raw cashews, macrobiotics and tofu. They mostly turned out to be the guilty resolutions after a night of overindulging in Chianti and bad mushrooms. We'd dutifully accompany them to the Natural Store, and for the trip we got a disgusting carob yogurt bar. Ick. Those early days weren't pretty, folks.

But eating has evolved, and so has the concept of raw foods. Smart Monkey Foods is trying to elevate the concept of eating "live" foods (no, that doesn't mean chasing a cow with a fork) into a gourmet experience. Totally cruelty-free (vegetarian vegan), environmentally friendly and "guilt-free" in their organic goodness, the Smart Monkeys teach raw food cooking at Whole Foods each month and offer sporadic dinners. The last, at Kalga Café in March featured a Mexican theme with wild rice, salads, tacos and a lemon/berry compote.

The next cooking class is offered on April 5, where they'll create four-course menu including Flax Cracker Pizza and Angel Hair Pasta w/ Marinara.
